Wenn ich ein Vöglein wär’
30" x 24" x 1.5" oil on canvas
This painting was inspired by a German Folk song, sung to me by my Oma Dolfi when I was a child, growing up in Germany. As a young adult, I immigrated to the USA and married in 2008. Unfortunately, my Oma was unable to attend the wedding as the plane ride would have been too exhausting. She however returned the RSVP card and it read:
“Wenn ich ein Vöglein wär’
Und auch zwei Flüglein hätt’,
Flög’ ich zu dir!
Weil’s aber nicht kann sein,
Bleib’ ich allhier”
Translation:
“If I were a little bird,
And had two little wings,
I’d fly to you!
But since it cannot be,
I shall stay right here.”
